Things to avoid creating a poor website.
-
Do not use PDF files for on-line reading. Use them for optional supplementary information.
-
Avoid flashy introductions and distracting animation
-
For the chromatically challenged, avoid using gaudy or multi coloured combinations
-
Ensure that all of your links lead to an active web/page
-
The internet standard for link identification is underlined blue font. Do not mislead the browser by using this format for any other reason
- Avoid underlining words that are not links. Use bold face or italics for emphasis
- Avoid pages that scroll on forever or are too wide, create new pages with separate titles.
- Coloured text on coloured or textured background makes it difficult to read, especially for the over 40s
-
Be thorough in proof reading. Pour spellink and granma makes your site look amerchurish
-
Keep file sizes to the barest minimum, as browsers loose interest after 10 seconds and if your site hasn’t downloaded by then, they’ll move on to another site.
-
Stay away from “under construction” messages. Nobody searches for a site that is not there. Either you have it or you don’t! Make it presentable and don’t publicize it until it’s ready.
